Templepatrick V Armagh 13/06/09
Armagh suffered a surprise and disappointing loss at Templepatrick on Saturday as a good bowling and fielding display was not backed up with the bat. Lloyd Hamilton returned to the side having missed the league win at Donacloney but Armagh were otherwise unchanged. After a delayed start Armagh captain CP Kulkarni won the toss and elected to field on a pitch at Ballyclare Rugby Club’s Cloughan ground that looked good despite the frequent heavy showers. Armagh were right on top early on though as Reg Stinson tormented batsmen with controlled seam and swing; inducing Greer to edge behind to Gareth McCarter. Kulkarni clean bowled Morrow and Thompson was run out brilliantly by Colin Russell swooping at cover and returning accurately to McCarter who completed the run out. The home side were then in deep trouble at 23-4 when Reg Stinson found another edge which was taken by the diving McCarter. At this point the home captain Campbell with Jackson tried to rebuild the innings with some steady batting and capitalising on the occasional loose and short delivery. Not many of these came from David Bullick though and he took the wicket of Campbell in a great economical spell of only 20 runs off his ten overs. Mark Stinson bowled C Busby and Harry Doyle had Jackson caught behind for a spirited 49 that gave his team a chance. Stuart Lester and Kulkarni finished the job for the Armagh side; the former getting an edge from J Busby that gave McCarter a fourth catch in a great display behind the stumps while the other two were caught by Michael Villiers and Hamilton respectively as Templepatrick were 135 all out.
The target ought to have been no problem for Armagh and it didn’t seem like it was going to be as Villiers and Russell cruised to 38-0 with a minimum of fuss but few could have predicted the carnage that would follow. Wickets tumbled at an alarming rate in the face of disciplined if unspectacular bowling with only Villiers, Hamilton and Bullick crossing double figures. With the light getting steadily worse as the numerous rain delays came back to haunt the teams, the game finished at twenty to nine in virtual darkness as Reg Stinson was adjudged leg before wicket with Armagh still nineteen runs short and Templepatrick hardly able to believe that they had managed to win. Armagh would need a much improved display against Saintfield the following day……
