Building Great Batters: Technique, Tactics, Temperament and Training
Introduction
Batting is one of cricket’s most rewarding skills.
There are few feelings in sport that compare to timing a straight drive, building a match-winning partnership, or helping your team chase down a target under pressure.
Great batting is not simply about scoring runs.
It is about making decisions, solving problems, managing pressure and adapting to different conditions and opponents.
At Armagh Cricket Club we encourage players to develop a batting style that suits their strengths while building strong technical foundations.
This guide provides a complete overview of batting fundamentals, advanced concepts, common mistakes and practical training methods.
Chapter 1: The Mindset of a Batter
Before discussing technique, it is important to understand the role of a batter.
Every batter has three primary responsibilities:
Protect their wicket.
Score runs.
Build partnerships.
Many young players focus only on the second objective.
The best batters understand that scoring runs becomes much easier once the first objective is mastered.
The Three Phases of an Innings
Phase 1 – Survival
The first task is to settle at the crease.
Focus on:
Watching the ball
Judging length
Assessing conditions
Building confidence
A batter who survives the first ten balls often becomes far more dangerous.
Phase 2 – Accumulation
Once settled:
Rotate strike
Find gaps
Build partnerships
Many successful innings are built through singles rather than boundaries.
Phase 3 – Control
An established batter should begin influencing the game.
Focus on:
Manipulating field placements
Identifying weak bowlers
Controlling scoring tempo
This is where major scores are built.
Chapter 2: Grip
The grip is the batter’s connection to the bat.
A poor grip can limit control, timing and power.
Basic Grip
For a right-handed batter:
Left hand near the top of the handle
Right hand directly beneath
Hands close together
The “V” formed by thumb and forefinger should point down the back of the bat.
Key Coaching Points
✓ Relaxed hands
✓ Top hand controls the bat
✓ Bottom hand supports
✓ Avoid excessive tension
Common Errors
Bottom-Hand Dominance
Symptoms:
Across-the-line shots
Loss of control
Poor timing
Correction:
Practise top-hand-only drills
Chapter 3: Stance
The stance provides the foundation for every movement.
Characteristics of a Good Stance
Balanced
Weight evenly distributed.
Relaxed
Tension slows reactions.
Athletic
Ready to move in any direction.
Comfortable
No two elite players look exactly alike.
Stance Checklist
✓ Feet shoulder-width apart
✓ Knees slightly flexed
✓ Head still
✓ Eyes level
✓ Bat grounded comfortably
✓ Weight balanced
Chapter 4: Watching the Ball
This remains the most important batting skill.
Elite batters gather information from:
The bowler’s approach
Arm position
Release point
Seam presentation
Ball trajectory
Coaching Exercise
Tennis Ball Number Drill
Coach writes numbers on tennis balls.
Player must call out the number before playing the shot.
This improves concentration and tracking.
Chapter 5: Footwork
Footwork creates opportunities.
Poor footwork creates dismissals.
Forward Movement
Used against fuller deliveries.
Objectives:
Reach the pitch of the ball
Control movement
Maintain balance
Back Foot Movement
Used against shorter deliveries.
Objectives:
Create space
Adjust to bounce
Control body position
Common Error
Half-forward movement.
This leaves the batter vulnerable to:
LBW
Edges
Bowled dismissals
Commit decisively.
Chapter 6: Defensive Batting
Defence remains the foundation of all batting.
Even the most aggressive players possess strong defensive techniques.
Forward Defensive
Key points:
Front foot to pitch of ball
Head over front knee
Full face of bat presented
Soft hands
Back Foot Defensive
Key points:
Move back early
Stay side-on
Keep balance
Why Defence Matters
Good defence:
Builds confidence
Frustrates bowlers
Creates scoring opportunities later
