🏏 Redecorating the Bar & Lounge
With the cricket season approaching fast, it’s been a very busy time off the pitch as well at Armagh Cricket Club. You may have noticed a lot of work and huge activity at 35 Mall West in recent weeks as we’ve been busy with redecorating the bar and lounge area.
It’s been a fantastic effort by everyone from our members getting things prepared for the tradesmen to come in, to the skilled professionals who’ve carried out the work to a wonderful standard.
There’s new furniture, supplied by Nugent & Gibney Ltd, a new ceiling and floor, and some much needed cosmetic work. So if you haven’t seen it, here’s a few photos to share, though you’d be better calling in for a look and some refreshments just to get the real deal. It really is a fantastic transformation. Well done to everyone involved!

🏏 Grounds / Season Start Update
There are fewer better places to play cricket than at Armagh Cricket Club on Armagh’s famous Mall, and that’s just what the visiting supporters and players say!
Over the last week our hugely dedicated, determined, versatile and willing grounds team have been working all hours, on the mall, and behind the scenes, at getting the grounds and both pitches up to speed after a very difficult wet Winter and early Spring period.
To say the turnaround has been incredible is a mere understatement as for the first time in a long time the mall has taken shape and looks splendid for the 2026 season to commence next weekend.
As you may know already the Northern Cricket Union, rightly delayed the season for 1 week and the first home games will be NEXT Saturday, May 2nd, with our 5th XI playing host to Enniskillen on the mall.
There will then be a bumper Bank Holiday Monday, May 4th, and home games for the 1st XI and 4th XI. So keep those dates in the diary!
It’s incredible that a few good days of sunshine can make such a difference. So here’s a massive congratulations to all the guys who’ve made it all happen and here’s a few snaps from yesterday and this morning to show how well the mall looks going into another season.

🏏 Our Professional Luan Makes A Welcome Return
Armagh Cricket Club are delighted to have been able to welcome back overseas player Luan Liebenberg to the city in the last week, pictured here at practice with 1st XI captain Michael Hoey.
Liebenberg made a huge impact during the 2025 campaign, establishing himself as one of the most influential players in the league. The South African all-rounder finished as the leading wicket-taker in Section One, claiming an outstanding 44 wickets across the season and consistently delivering with the ball in key moments. His ability to break partnerships and control the tempo of matches made him a cornerstone of Armagh’s bowling attack.
But Liebenberg’s contribution was far from one-dimensional. He also proved his value with the bat, producing crucial innings throughout the season, including an impressive century that highlighted his capability as a genuine all-rounder. Whether stabilising the innings or accelerating the scoring, his performances added depth and balance to the Armagh lineup.
‘I had forgotten how cold it was in Northern Ireland if I’m being honest’ joked Liebenberg, ‘but I’m delighted to be back in Armagh and I’m excited to get started again. I understand the weather hasn’t been good in the spring but there’s been great work done on the Mall this week and it’s taking shape’
Michael Hoey said ‘It’s great to have Luan back in Armagh for 2026 and we look forward to getting outside and active as soon as we can. The continuity of having the same overseas player for two years can only be a good thing, he knows us and we know him, plus he will be familiar with the conditions. Bringing back a player of Liebenberg’s calibre not only strengthens the squad on the field but also provides leadership and experience for younger players developing within the club, including the successful under 15 group he worked with last season.
As preparations build for the new season, expectations will naturally be high. If Liebenberg can replicate his 2025 form, Armagh will be well positioned to challenge once again.

🏏 2nd XI Fixtures 2026
As the season fast approaches , we share the 2nd XI fixtures for the 2026 season and a few inspiring words from skipper Adam Woods….
“ I am really looking forward to the season kicking off with just over a month till our opening game away to Woodvale, always a tough game but good to start with a challenge.
We are looking to bounce back following a tough season last year and aiming for a good cup run with our first round fixture at the glorious mall, also excited to bring up our youth players who have continued to prove themselves and working hard at indoor nets. So everyone is keen to get up and running and we hope the weather improves, bring it on! “
As the ever ready skipper said, Woodvale away first up, and a few home games to settle in nicely. Here’s the full list and also a team photo of Woods’ Warriors pictured at the end of the 2025 season after an emphatic win against Muckamore…

🏏 AGM
Recently we had our Annual General Meeting at the pavilion. Before the meeting started, those present stood in a minutes silence to all those bereaved since the last AGM. In particular the President paid tribute to former club captain and later taverners player and committee member Kieran Macauley (Biffo), who sadly passed away in March 2025. The members present also reflected on the tragic loss of club volunteer Eddie Giffin who sadly died in May 2025.
The meeting then proceeded in the usual manner when the President delivered the Annual Report on club activities.
The report paid reference to club positivity on continuing to field five senior teams with great success. Also highlighted a wonderful youth set up from Power Cricket up to under 11’s under 13’s and under 15 XI’s. The Under 15’s received special mention as they were victorious in winning their league and a subsequent play off to bring silverware to the club. Tributes were also paid to Ami Mandrekar who collected awards for Cricket Ireland and NCU Coach of the year.
The Honorary Treasurer’s report was then received with great enthusiasm amid the need to continue to maintain tight restraints but also to maintain the need to improve facilities to both pitches and clubrooms accordingly.
After the reports the election of officers and Team Captains took place with the following results :-
PRESIDENT - Keith Wilson
VICE PRESIDENT - Noel Humphries
HONORARY TREASURER - Paul Wilson
HONORARY SECRETARY - Gareth McCarter
P.R.O. - Dan Ballantyne
SUBSCRIPTION SECRETARY - Phil Doyle
1st XI Captain - Michael Hoey
2nd XI Captain - Adam Woods
3rd & 4th XI Captain - Keith Wilson
5th XI Captain - Raymond Hetherington
The meeting then concluded with a very special presentation. Club President, Keith Wilson, presented club legend Arnold Courtney with an engraved award to mark the milestone of playing an incredible SEVEN decades for Armagh Cricket Club, making his debut in 1968 and playing up until the 2024 season. It was mentioned that it would be highly unlikely that this incredible achievement would ever be repeated in our club’s history given the magnitude of it. Unfortunately records of appearances are not recorded but it was envisaged that Arnold represented the club well in excess of 1,500 games at all levels. A great friend to many and someone who has been such a prominent figure throughout the club’s history both on the pitch and away from it.
It hasn’t been officially declared that Arnold is in retirement, and with an over 50’s league starting up, there might still be an appearance or two remaining. We will wait and see! Congratulations and Thanks Arnold on your dedication and commitment for so long.

Hopefully the weather starts to pick up and we can get outside before the season starts. We welcome back our overseas player from last year, Luan Liebenberg, and are excited to feature in the Irish National Cup this season with a plum draw at home to Ballyspallen on Saturday 9th May.”
Here’s a full list of fixtures for your diary and we will share the other teams shortly and a few words of wisdom from the captains concerned.

🏏 Throwback Thursday
Another Throwback Thursday and a couple of pictures from the 1980’s and 1990’s for some Armagh Cricket Club teams.
Firstly, the black and white photo depicts the Third XI, before a home game with Collegians, from the 1980’s, under the captaincy of the late Billy Williamson, who later became Club President, as well as some other very familiar faces.
The colour photograph, focuses on the Fourth XI touring squad, before setting of on their tour to Glasgow in May 1998 . That particular team was under the management of Ian “Sparky” Mitchell, pictured fifth from the left, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago. Fair to say it was a hugely successful operation! Note also the under construction Sainsbury’s building in the background.

🏏 Sad News
The officers and members of Armagh Cricket Club are deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of our former player Bobby Orr. Bobby was a second XI stalwart from the late 1970’s right through to the mid 1990’s, winning bowling awards with his renowned accurate line and length bowling.
Bobby also represented the first XI on many occasions from 1980-1986. One of his most famous moments came from a first XI cup final in the Mid Ulster McGredy Cup Competition in the early 1980’s, Armagh were chasing exactly 100 to win when Bobby, not renowned for his batting, entered the run chase at number 11 and the score on 99 for 9 and duly hit the winning runs, to secure the win, a story he often recited on occasions afterwards.
Bobby was a gentleman, and a larger than life character on and off the field. Deepest sympathies are extended to his daughter Lisa and the entire family circle at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

🏏 Throwback Thursday
It’s been a while since we’ve had a throwback Thursday but here’s a few photos from yesteryear on the place we call home, The Mall.
Firstly, a local league select from the 1980’s and then the 1st XI from the late 1970’s.
Some great characters in each photo and some sadly no longer with us. The photos contain 5 players who also became club Presidents after their playing days had ceased.
Special thanks to another former President, and club legend, George Breakey, who supplied one of the photos and Paul McCord who provided the other one.
