3rd XI Hold Their Nerve in Derriaghy Thriller
Last Sunday, the Armagh Cricket Club 3rd XI made the trip to Queensway to take on their Derriaghy counterparts in a winner-takes-all Northern Cricket Union Junior 6 league encounter. Quite simply, the victors would stay up, while the losing side would face relegation.
Batting first, the hosts posted a very competitive 172 for 7 from their 25 overs. Robin Brown led the way with an excellent 67, ably supported by Alfie O’Neill, who contributed 54.
For the visitors, Oscar Steenson starred with the ball, claiming 3 for 21. The young left-arm spinner has made a habit of producing breakthroughs at crucial moments this season, and once again delivered when it mattered. Josh Wilson and Adam Wilson also claimed a wicket apiece.
Special mention, however, must go to Ricky Dobbs, who took 2 for 16 as first-change bowler, picking up his wickets at vital moments and helping to restrict the Derriaghy total.
Armagh began their run chase confidently, boasting a strong batting line-up. However, wickets continued to fall at untimely moments, with several batsmen dismissed just as they appeared to be settling in.
Adam Wilson contributed 20, Ryan Hetherington made 30, Ashley scored 19 and Ryan McCarter added 16. The top scorer, however, was the “season find” Gareth Steenson, who produced another hard-hitting innings of 36.
Armagh Teams Never Make It Easy!
In the words of The Doctor (aka Paul Wilson), “Armagh teams never make it easy!” - and his words certainly rang true.
From a commanding 44 for 0, Armagh slipped to 112 for 4 and then 158 for 8, leaving the match finely poised and the nerves jangling.
However, young, cool heads prevailed when it mattered most. The final-wicket pairing of Josh Wilson and Daniel Beggs held their nerve to see Armagh over the line. With victory tantalisingly close, Beggs punched a perfectly timed cover drive to the boundary to secure the narrowest of victories - by just one wicket.
For the second successive season, the 3rd XI have performed “The Great Escape”, securing another season in NCU Junior 6.
