Our senior teams had a mixed set of results this past weekend…
1st XI
Michael Hoey’s 1st XI lost out to their familiar opponents Carrickfergus in a rain-affected game on the Mall on Saturday.
A superb 145 run partnership for the 4th wicket between Arnie Wright (82*) and Liebenberg (76) provided the foundation for the Armagh total.
However, key partnerships and some late hitting meant Carrick reached the revised total with 4 wickets to spare.
2nd XI
At Carrick, the 2nd XI somehow managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a thriller at Middle Road.
Having been put in to bat, Dougan (21) helped anchor the Armagh innings - however, perhaps feeling the effects of last week’s cup semi-final defeat, the Armagh innings struggled to gain momentum, with the Armagh batsmen getting starts before falling to good bowling from the home side.
They recovered to 103-5 with time to push on. But, in the space of two deliveries, Armagh found themselves in trouble at 103-7 - however, a vital 41 run 8th wicket partnership between Sizeland and Ballantyne pushed us to a defendable total of 156.
Carrick began quickly, seemingly taking the game away from Armagh from the start - yet wickets began to fall with young Daniel Beggs bowling an excellent spell taking 4 wickets on his 2nd XI debut, swinging the game in Armagh’s favour as Carrick found themselves 106-7.
With time on their side, Carrick’s captain led the fightback, with a 41 run 8th wicket partnership of their own, bringing the home side within 10 runs of their target with plenty of overs to utilise.
The game seemed a foregone conclusion until Woods handed the ball to Stuart McCall, and things were turned on their head once again.
In a tense finale, McCall removed the final 3 Carrick batsmen, to the joy of the away side.
Thanks to Carrick for a great game, and superb hospitality afterwards.
The win retains the 2nd XI’s unbeaten record in the league.
3rd XI
On Sunday, in a rearranged 20 over game, the 3rd XI batted first and posted a competative total.
Oscar Steenson (43) continued his superb form with the bat, and was ably backed by Ashley (21) and Noah Archer (22*).
Sadly, an experienced and promotion-chasing Downpatrick side proved too much as they chased down the Armagh total with 4 overs to spare.
